Gemma is a Senior Associate in the Employment team.

Providing advice on human resources and employment law matters, including issues arising during staff recruitment, the terms and conditions of employee contracts and directors’ service agreements, policies and procedures governing personnel, sickness absence and grievance and disciplinary matters.

Regularly appearing before the Employment Tribunal to defend employers against claims of unfair dismissal, discrimination, breach of contract and unlawful deduction.

Gemma works with the Corporate team on employment issues arising out of business mergers and acquisitions, company restructures and outsourcing arrangements, such as TUPE and large-scale redundancy programmes.

Clients range from fledgling businesses to SMEs and large corporates and include maintained and independent schools.

Recent examples of how Gemma has supported clients include:

  • supporting a multi-academy trust to restructure its workforce following collective consultation with staff and unions;
  • settling a high value pregnancy discrimination claim on behalf of a recruitment agency on very attractive terms;
  • enabling a maintained school to change its hours of operation following consultation with staff, governors and parents; and
  • providing training to the managers of a national supermarket on how to spot potential employment issues and the role of early legal advice in reducing the risk of a claim.
