Matt is a Partner in the Employment team.

He is known for his strategic advisory offering supporting corporate and commercial employers with a range of employment and people related issues. Working in collaboration with clients, he advises on restructuring projects, staff transfers and TUPE, employment litigation, outsourcing, and industrial relations. Matt also works with businesses who find themselves in an insolvency situation, advising on the employment aspects that need to be managed.

In addition, he is experienced in providing data protection advice specifically relating to subject access requests being requested by employees and ex-employees.

Working with privately owned and listed businesses, he works across all sectors and brings his understanding of the nuances of a variety of markets to ensure that the advice given to clients is pragmatic, harnesses opportunities and mitigates risk.

His experience of working with US clients to help navigate UK law is of benefit to clients operating across these jurisdictions.

Clients include Enigma Group, Epwin Group Plc and Stagecoach East Midlands.

Recent examples of how Matt has supported his clients include:

  • advising a national Fire and Security business on the employment and TUPE aspects of a complex second generation outsourcing contract to provide fire and security maintenance and monitoring services at a prestigious business park, involving significant and potential employment liabilities that needed to be adequately protected against;
  • working with a national manufacturing group on its coronavirus pandemic contingency planning; the shutdown of its entire business and the related lay-off of staff (subsequently converted to furlough); and the restructuring process following its exit from shutdown including a large scale collective consultation and redundancy process at one of its trading businesses; and
  • supporting and advising an international technology business in relation to a complex dispute between members of the group board and the managing director of one of its trading subsidiaries, involving allegations of misconduct and a breakdown in the relationship, grievances between board members, and refusals to engage in due process, culminating in the removal and termination of the managing director’s employment.
