Mel is a Family Partner.
Mel advises and assists business owners, professionals and mid and high-net wealth individuals to resolve the financial issues which arise in their personal relationships.
She helps her clients to protect the wealth they bring into a relationship, whether they are planning to marry, enter a civil partnership or cohabit. She also helps clients to protect any new wealth they receive during those relationships.
A substantial part of her practice involves helping clients to pursue and settle the financial claims that arise on the breakdown of their relationships.
In addition to finances, Mel also offers a holistic service to family clients, providing specialist advice also on the arrangements for their children and any protective injunctions they may need or be facing.
Mel is a member of Resolution, which is a national organisation of family lawyers who deal with family issues constructively and put the best interests of the children first.
Mel also gives clients the opportunity to resolve their family issues collaboratively. This involves a series of four-way meetings attended by both parties and their solicitors.
Examples of Mel’s work include:
- Acting for a wife of a GP, where the husband was a joint owner of the GP Practice and had a significant NHS pension, and where he was suspected to have an interest in a number of listed companies based in India.
- Acting for an equine vet who was a joint business owner in divorce proceedings, involving substantial wealth inherited by the client’s wife and where her income needs were largely met by family wealth.
- Acting for (and against) a number of police officers and members of the Armed Forces where public sector pensions have been in issue.
