Alexander specialises in advising UK resident high-net-worth individuals with complex family arrangements, business interests, and overseas assets on a range of estate planning matters. This includes the preparation of sophisticated wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, and the establishment of trust structures.
Alex focuses on ensuring that family interests and wealth are protected through generational planning, and assists clients with the mitigation of Inheritance Tax.
He also works closely with personal representatives in dealing with complex estates, guiding them through the probate process.
He has extensive experience in dealing with high-value and complex estates, and has worked closely with legal advisers in other jurisdictions when there are overseas assets.
Alexander also advises trustees on their duties and responsibilities in administering trusts, and prepares the necessary trust documentation required when exercising administrative and dispositive powers.
He is a full member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).
Examples of Alexander’s work include:
- Advising executors on the administration of a high-value estate, which included a large property portfolio and assets abroad. This involved significant planning to raise capital for Inheritance Tax, ensuring that relief was given for tax levied in another jurisdiction, and ensuring the distribution of assets to the beneficiary was handled in a tax-efficient manner.
- Advising a wealthy client on Inheritance Tax planning matters involving the gift of a valuable family home, and ensuring the planning did not fall foul of the gifts with reservation of benefit rules.
- Advising a client with a bespoke will and Powers of Attorney to take account of a young family, a nuptial agreement, and significant wealth including an interest in a family partnership.
