Mediation

Service overview

What we do

Mediation gives separating couples and families a structured, confidential way to resolve issues without asking a court to make every decision. Our impartial mediators help participants discuss arrangements for finances, property and children constructively and at a pace suited to their circumstances.
Sessions can take place in person, remotely or through a hybrid approach. Where direct contact is not appropriate, shuttle mediation can allow each participant to engage separately.

How we can help

The process usually begins with an individual Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting, where we explain how mediation works and assess whether it is suitable. Joint sessions then focus on the issues, available information and potential solutions.
If agreement is reached, we record the proposals in a Memorandum of Understanding so independent legal advice can be taken and, where appropriate, a binding court order obtained. If agreement is not possible, we explain other resolution options, including arbitration, early neutral evaluation and private financial dispute resolution.

Supporting constructive discussions about living arrangements, time with each parent and important decisions for children.

Helping separating couples exchange information and explore fair arrangements for property, income, pensions and other assets.

Providing flexible formats where participants need separate rooms, legal advisers involved or additional safeguards.

Explaining the process, understanding each participant’s circumstances and assessing whether mediation is suitable.

Recording proposals reached in mediation so independent legal advice can be taken and binding orders pursued where appropriate.

Explaining arbitration, early neutral evaluation and private financial dispute resolution where mediation does not produce agreement.

Offering sessions in the format best suited to the participants and the issues to be resolved.
