As part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, November 2025 saw the beginning of a phased implementation for compulsory identity (ID) verification checks for company directors and people with significant control (PSCs) to come into force, with different requirements coming in at staggered intervals during the transitional phase.
The background
Previously, it was not a legal requirement for company directors and PSCs to verify their identities with Companies House. However, to limit opportunity for false details to be registered, the government is bringing in increased regulation in the form of compulsory ID verification checks.
Whether you’re an existing company director or PSC, or intending to become one in future, it is vital to ensure that you’re fully up to speed with the new legislation to help you remain compliant.
The timeline
What you need to know
You can complete your ID checks with Companies House free of charge. Alternatively, you can verify your identity through an ACSP on a chargeable basis.
You’ll need to provide your:
- Full name;
- Date of birth;
- Email address; and
- ID documentation.
If you’re verifying through Companies House, you can do so:
- Digitally using the GOV UK One Login service; or
- In-person at selected post offices.
Once your identity has been successfully verified (usually on the same day as application submission), you’ll receive your Companies House personal code via email, which is used to connect your verified identity to your Companies House records. You’ll need to share your Companies House code with us to enable us to file submissions to Companies House on your behalf.
If you need any guidance or support throughout this transitional period, get in touch with our Corporate team and we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction.
