A partner at Knights says he’s proud at being appointed to the Birmingham City University (BCU) Board of Governors.
Stuart Tym, a planning lawyer and partner in Birmingham, has been announced as one of five additions to the group – who aim to support the University in achieving its strategic goals.
Speaking ahead of the announcement Stuart said it’s a great opportunity: “I was initially in disbelief when I heard that I’d been appointed. I’m very proud to be in this situation and very excited to see what’s going to come up; whilst also interested to learn more about the University.
“The role came about after I had been recommended as someone who might be able to help the University manage and broaden the scope of its own built environment. They wanted people who can bring their property and estate management experiences to the table.
“The campus is literally on the foot of where HS2 is scheduled to land in Birmingham and it’s clear the University want to use this to become a central point for education, research and development for both the city and West Midlands as a whole - so it’s an exciting opportunity for me to be a part of a project that is looking to support those living and learning locally.”
Stuart will take up his new position in October 2025.
He says he hopes to bring a diverse range of experience to the role: “I’ve worked in a wide range of sectors and I’m not just a lawyer who’s had 15-20 years in the private sector. I’ve worked across smaller firms, in local government and in the Army. All these experiences give you a feel for different levels of decision making and the way processes work, so I hope to bring everything I’ve learned to the forefront when undertaking this new role. Also, having worked in the city for as long as I have, it’s nice to get involved and hopefully have some input into how things grow whilst learning something from that process.
“By the end of my four or so years on the Board, I’d like to have a better understanding of how the University works and seeing it become a bigger and better part of the city. I also think it’s a great opportunity for Knights to build a connection with such an important organisation in Birmingham – because local people are at the heart of what we are trying to do. I see an opportunity for us to help build those relations and garner a path for future generations to learn and progress.”
